La valeur patrimoniale du monastère des Franciscains et de la chapelle Saint-Antoine tient notamment à son intérêt historique. L'ensemble témoigne de la présence des Pères Franciscains à Trois-Rivières. Le Père Frédéric Janssoone (1838-1916) vient au Québec une première fois en 1881, puis, il revient établir la communauté à Trois-Rivières en 1888. Le Commissariat de Terre Sainte est érigé en 1888 et inauguré l'année suivante sur un terrain offert par l'évêque Louis-François Laflèche (1818-1898). La chapelle, lieu public et de rassemblement, est implantée plus près de la rue et se veut marquante dans le paysage. Le vocabulaire néo-roman, sa façade monumentale ainsi que les jeux de brique et de pierre contribuent à la richesse de son architecture. Le monastère et la chapelle sont construits selon les plans du père Frédéric et des architectes Daoust et Lafond. Charles Lafond (1867-1937) est l'architecte concepteur de plusieurs bâtiments d'importance de Shawinigan et de Trois-Rivières, dont l'église de Saint-Philippe.
