When traveling along HWY 211, one might glimpse something strange. A hulking behemoth of rubber atop a sturdy base. The famous "Hester Tire" is the calling card of both the display and the business which bears its namesake. But which came first? Maybe it's a chicken and the egg kinda thing. If you're like others, your head mgiht fill with a few qurstions upon first sight.
Is it real? Does it work?
Yes, and yes.
"The tire stands 14 feet high and is 5.5 feet wide. It weighs 10,400 pounds. It is made for the 797B Caterpillar dump truck and new, they cost around $55,000." via StrangeCarolinas
The tire, as impressive as it is, is one of many such tires built for a larger-than-life piece of machinery. However, plucked into the scenis byways of backroad North Carolina, it seems like a giant among the pines.
So do like many others have before you and stop. Take a picture. And marvel at the sheer magnitude of human engineering. The scale of the ordinary, suddenly writ large. An industrial oddity, made into a brake-squealing site.
One of many, yet one of a kind. Welcome to the Hester Tire.
