"Les fortifications et casernements de Thionville, place forte depuis le Moyen Âge, ont connu de nombreux bouleversements et aménagements aux XVIe et XVIIIe siècles. Ce sont ces fortifications, dépassées par l’artillerie de cette fin de XIXe siècle, qu’outrepassent les Allemands en prenant Thionville en 1870. La ville de cette époque est ainsi cernée de remparts ponctués de bastions défensifs. La garnison allemande s’amplifiant, il devînt nécessaire de construire de nouveaux casernements au sein même de la place.
Pour ce faire, on assiste en 1878, à la construction de deux casernes à l’épreuve des bombes en bordure des courtines. Il s’agit des casernes de Terville, aujourd’hui disparue et Griesberg.
La construction de cet édifice militaire, entreprise avant les travaux de démantèlement des remparts, fut opérée entre les bastions 4 et 5, soit aujourd’hui entre les rues de la vieille Porte et du Manège. D’une longueur d’environ 76 mètres pour 16 mètres de large, la caserne disposait d’un voûtement de 1,63 mètre destiné à la protéger des projectiles.
La Griesberg Kaserne était destinée à accueillir des artilleurs et leur matériel, en l’occurrence le 1er bataillon du Rheinishes Fussartillerie Regiment n°8,régiment ayant participé à la prise, et par là même, à la destruction d’une partie de la cité en 1870. Elle deviendra partie intégrante de la caserne Vauban après 1918 et utilisée militairement jusqu’aux années 1980. Une partie du casernement sera détruit au profit du parking jouxtant le temple protestant."
