Swing saw (18th century)
In the 19th century, Arreau had more than 20 mills, the majority of which were sawmills. On the ruins of the Calamun sawmill, the municipality of Arreau moved, restored and installed this 18th C. swing saw which comes from the Héchettes sawmill, a village located downstream from Arreau on the edge of the Neste d'Aure . The trees were felled and then turned into logs, which were then sawn to be packaged into planks or beams. This painful and dangerous work fell to the pit sawyers. Hydraulic power later replaced human power.
Here, this energy is produced by taking water *** from the Neste du Louron from the rock dike near the town hall. A channel directs the flow towards the sawmill to drive the mechanism that will allow the blade to go up and down, imitating the gesture of the pit sawyer.
The trolley on which the log to be cut is stowed, advances during each descent of the blade thanks to a lever arm system. When the cut is complete, the carriage must be pulled manually to resume a new starting position.
