"La Mahaudière is a large sugar plantation of the eighteenth century, located at Anse-Bertrand in Guadeloupe.
The history of the Mahaudière habitation goes back to 1732, when it is still only a piece of land identified under the number 570. Before becoming a major sugar refinery, the property of Étienne Douillard Mahaudière had, around 1770, a vast cotton factory and slaves' huts. The owner then enlarges the house and begins to produce sugar until the Revolution.
In 1796, the house passes to the widow Douillard Mahaudière. His sons Pierre and Jean Baptiste Douillard Mahaudière, founded in 1812 a company to manage the house which becomes then a candy. This one goes entirely to Jean-Baptiste Douillard Mahaudière following the death of his brother Pierre in 1825. In 1828, 147 slaves work on the dwelling, which extends on 145 hectares.
At the end of the 19th century, the house was transformed into a distillery that would operate until the beginning of the 1950s, ending the sugar business.
The site is now owned by the Department of Guadeloupe.
The remains of the dwelling: its well, its windmill, the chimney of the sugar mill, its coal ovens, part of the mansion and the slave village, are preserved. The remains of the slave district are still visible and date from the last phase of occupation. After the restoration of slavery in 1802, the slave boxes were rebuilt in masonry.
Of course, only ruins remain today: a mill turned into a chapel, a chimney, some buildings overgrown with vegetation and some metal vats. "

" La Mahaudière est une grande habitation sucrière du XVIIIème siècle, située à l’Anse-Bertrand en Guadeloupe.
L’histoire de l’habitation Mahaudière remonte à 1732, lorsqu’elle n’est encore qu’une parcelle de terre identifiée sous le numéro 570. Avant de devenir une importante sucrerie, la propriété d’Étienne Douillard Mahaudière disposait, vers 1770, d’une vaste cotonnerie et de cases d’esclaves. Le propriétaire agrandit ensuite l’habitation et commence à produire du sucre jusqu’à la Révolution.
En 1796, l’habitation passe à la veuve Douillard Mahaudière. Ses fils Pierre et Jean Baptiste Douillard Mahaudière, fondent en 1812 une société pour gérer l’habitation qui devient alors une sucrerie. Celle-ci revient entièrement à Jean-Baptiste Douillard Mahaudière suite au décès de sons frère Pierre en 1825. En 1828, 147 esclaves travaillent sur l’habitation, qui s’étend sur 145 hectares.
À la fin du XIXème siècle, l’habitation se transforme en une distillerie qui fonctionnera jusqu’au début des années 1950, mettant fin à l’activité sucrière.
Le site est aujourd’hui la propriété du Département de la Guadeloupe.
Les vestiges de l’habitation: son puits, son moulin à vent, la cheminée de la sucrerie, ses fours à charbon, une partie de la maison de maître et du village d’esclaves, sont conservés. Les restes du quartier d’esclaves sont encore visibles et datent de la dernière phase d'occupation. Après le rétablissement de l’esclavage en 1802, les cases d’esclaves ont été reconstruites en maçonnerie.
Certes il n'en reste aujourd'hui que des ruines: un moulin transformé en chapelle, une cheminée, quelques bâtiments envahis par la végétation et quelques cuves métalliques. "
