On the southeast corner of the Jewell County Courthouse Square is a monument dedicated to all who lost their lives, in war and in peace, in the service of our country. In front of this monument is a plaque dedicated to Robert Lauren Standawick, who was shot down over Laos on February 03, 1971. One source reports that he was captured and held in captivity in Laos. However, his name appeared on no POW list and he was not returned to the USA in 1973 with other POWs. Another source claims that he perished when his aircraft crashed. You can read more here and here.
