The New York Stock Exchange can trace its origin to a document signed in 1792 by 24 brokers which provided some organization to their securities trading. The signing of this so-called Buttonwood Agreement took place on Wall Street in New York City and, according to folklore, under a buttonwood tree. Thus began a long association of Wall Street with financial markets to the extent that nowadays the term Wall Street is practically synonymous with financial institutions.

The NYSE had no place to call home until 1865 when they moved into a new building located on Broad Street, just a stone’s throw south of Wall Street. It wasn’t long before they outgrew this building and in 1901, it was demolished (along with a couple of adjacent buildings) to make room for the current structure which first opened in 1903.

The commission for the new building was awarded to New York architect George B. Post who had submitted a Roman-inspired neoclassical design. The imposing façade consists of six Corinthian columns supporting a large triangular pediment containing statuary called “Integrity Protecting the Works of Man.” These statues were designed by prominent New York sculptor John Q. A. Ward. Ward also designed the statue of George Washington that stands in front of Federal Hall (just across Wall Street from the NYSE) and which has also appeared on a U.S. postage stamp.

The stamp was issued in 1992 and celebrated the bicentennial of the New York Stock Exchange. In addition to the building’s front façade, the stamp also shows the floor of the Stock Exchange. There used to be a visitor’s gallery where you could watch the action on the floor, but it’s been closed since 9/11.
