Located on Stevens Street at the intersection of Everett Street is a tree carving of an angel and a child. There is a legend that the tree would not die, no matter how many times it was cut down it always grew back. It is said the reason why is due to a little girl who lived there. Supposedly her nickname was ‘Neich’ and she lived in the house next to the tree in the early 1900’s. She died when she was about 7 years old. She had always been a sickly child and was not permitted to go outside and play like other children. It is said she used to play with pennies as a favorite pastime. Homeowners since then still find pennies stacked around the house and since the tree has not died despite being cut down they decided to have a wood carver carve an angel descending from above and placing pennies into a child's hand. Thus ‘pennies from heaven.’
