Long Description:
In commemoration of the first landing of Canadian armored fighting vehicles in occupied Europe by the officers and soldiers of the 14th Tank Battalion of the Canadian Army.

registration: ON THE MORNING OF AUGUST 19, 1942, 29 ASSAULT TANKS BELONGING TO THE 14TH CALGARY REGIMENT (TANK) LANDED ON THIS BEACH TO SUPPORT THE RAID OF THE 2ND CANADIAN DIVISION OF INFANTRY THAT SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT IN DIEPPE (OPERATION JUBILEE).

MORE THAN HALF OF THE ASSAULT TANKS WE CAN ACCESS THE PROMENADE FROM THE BEACH. AS THE MAIN BATTLE FAILED, THE MAJORITY OF THESE TANKS RETURNED TOWARDS THE BEACH TO CREATE A STEEL SHIELD, EXPOSING THEIR SIDES TO THE ENEMY, TO PROTECT THE INFANTRY THAT WAS UNDER CONTINUOUS AND CONCENTRATED FIRE, AND WHO WAS FOLDING UP VIA THE LANDING VESSELS. THESE COURAGEOUS ASSAULT TANK CREWS FIRED UNTIL THEIR AMMUNITION WERE DEPLETED. THEN THE SOLDIERS HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN DIE IF THEY GET OUT OF THEIR TANKS, OR BE TAKEN PRISONER, IF THEY CHOSEN TO STAY INSIDE.

ALL ASSAULT TANKS THAT DISEMBARKED WERE TAKEN BY ENEMY FORCES. IN TOTAL, 13 MEN DEAD IN BATTLE (INCLUDING THE COMMANDER), 33 WERE INJURED IN THE BATTLE, AND 157 MEN WERE CAPTURED AND BECAME PRISONERS OF WAR FOR NEARLY THREE YEARS. ONLY A FEW SOLDIERS WHO LANDED RETURNED TO ENGLAND THAT DAY.

THE DIEPPE RAID WAS THE FIRST TIME CANADIAN ASSAULT TANKS WERE IN ACTION. THIS WAS ALSO THE FIRST TIME THEY PERFORMED AMPHIBIAN-TYPE OPERATIONS. THE SACRIFICES PERFORMED BY THE ASSAULT TANK CREWS PROVIDED REAL LESSONS THAT HELPED TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THE LANDING IN NORMANDY IN JUNE 1944. THEY PAVED THE WAY TO THE FINAL VICTORY OF 1945.

THIS MONUMENT IS IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE CALGARY REGIMENT WHO LOST THEIR LIVES, WERE INJURED, AND CAPTURED THIS DARK MORNING.

INAUGURATED ON AUGUST 19, 2017, WITH THE KIND AUTHORIZATION OF MAYOR SEBASTIEN JUMEL AND THE INHABITANTS OF THE CITY OF DIEPPE.
