It is at the entrance of this hamlet that stands the chapel of Notre-Dame de Piété, near a famous fountain. The road to Spain once passed in front of its threshold and travelers coming and going sometimes stopped to say a short prayer and throw an obolus through the oak grating which closed the facade of the building.
This chapel was erected in 1654 on the occasion of the plague which decimated the region and especially the parish of Cadeilhan-Trachère. It began on March 22, 1653, in Trachère, by making Jeanne Ferras, wife of Armand Pessoulé, its first victim. Two days later, Armand also died and three other members of his family fell one after the other.

The plague spread, soon increasing with the first heat. Despite the dedication of doctors and consuls, despite the zeal that the parish priest Jean Mascarou and the vicar Master Tanouilhe displayed at the bedside of all the dying, mortality reached frightening proportions: from December 8, 1653 to August 20, 1654, in particular, 44 deaths were recorded and around 40 people had already died since March. The cemetery was too small to accommodate so many corpses, they were buried everywhere, next to houses and even in the fields.

There were tragic scenes that the Death Register records. Thus, Dominique Peyrau died

"in the cemetery having himself made his sepulcher and taken away his shroud after having buried his mother-in-law and five of her children and remained three days in the said cemetery, awaiting death, having been more lost confessed, and having carried away on her money to have his body covered with earth ... "

In the month of June, consternation was general; the survivors of Cadeilhan-Trachère turned their gazes to Heaven and made the vow to build a chapel under the vacable of Our Lady of Piety. The plague ceased.

The inhabitants of Cadeilhan-Trachère undertook, by notarial deed, to endow and maintain the chapel. On July 20, 1654, the consuls and inhabitants

"doing both for themselves and for the rest of the inhabitants of the community of Cadeilhan-Trachère, who, of their good will and frank will, mused with devotion and having for this purpose built the chapel of Our Lady of Piety at the said place of Cadeilhan, that it pleased Our Lord to appease his anger and deliver from the plague of the plague, for the donation of the said chapel, maintenance and repair of it have promised and promise to bailhet annually and in perpetuity the sum of three books and more if needed ... "

They also founded, by the same act, 4 masses to be celebrated each year on the second Saturday of the months of May, June, July and August, at eight cents each.

Finally, Jean Ferras, too, undertook to found three other masses: two of Notre-Dame and the other in honor of the glorious Saint-Sébastien "changeable in perpetuity". The chapel had therefore its maintenance assured.

As soon as it was completed, it became a center of devotion in Cadeilhan-Trachère. The faithful came to pray there often; the engaged couples to contract marriage there to place themselves under the protection of the Blessed Virgin: Jean Ferras, of Cadeilhan, and Marguerite de Benque received the nuptial blessing there on November 26, 1654. At the feasts, especially those of the Assumption and of the Corpus Christi, the parishioners of Cadeilhan-Trachère went there in procession, after vespers.

In 1712, the oak baluster was placed which closed the facade of the old chapel.

Under the Revolution, the chapel suffered a lot because it was stripped of its income and its furniture. Of these, there remains only the pulpit of the missal.

But during the 19th century, the donations of the faithful: Jean-Pierre Soubiran, Canon Pène, Abbot Sajous in particular, were used to restore it.

The chapel of Our Lady of Piety was only lit by a very narrow window on the side of the epistle. The vault formed of a simple paneling was decorated with painted inscriptions reminiscent of the figures of the Virgin. The facade had a steeple surmounted by a beaten iron cock. The masonry altar was leaned against the north wall of the chapel.

In 1891, Father Jean-Baptiste Sajous took possession of the cure of Vignec and Cadeilhan-Trachère, its annex. He then thought of demolishing the old chapel to rebuild on its site another larger and more beautiful which could, on occasion, serve as a church. He began to carry out his project in 1909. With the help of the inhabitants of Cadeilhan-Trachère, he had the chapel thrown to the ground, then built the shell of the new one: walls, roof, parquet of the sanctuary. At the sanctuary, he placed a beautiful altar of Our Lady of Pity. But Father Sajous left the cure of Vignec in 1912.

C'est à l'entrée de ce hameau que s'élève, auprès d'une fontaine renommée, la chapelle de Notre-Dame de Piété. La route d'Espagne passait jadis devant son seuil et les voyageurs allant et venant s'arrêtaient parfois pour faire une courte prière et jeter une obole à travers la grille en bois de chêne qui fermait la façade de l'édifice.
Cette chapelle fut érigée en 1654 à l'occasion de la peste qui décima la contrée et spécialement la paroisse de Cadeilhan-Trachère. Elle débuta le 22 mars 1653, à Trachère, en faisant de Jeanne Ferras, femme d'Armand Pessoulé, sa première victime. Le surlendemain, Armand mourait à son tour et trois autres membres de sa famille tombèrent les uns après les autres.

Le fléau se répandit, augmentant bientôt avec les premières chaleurs. Malgré le dévouement des médecins et des consuls, malgré le zèle que le curé Jean Mascarou et le vicaire Maître Tanouilhe déployèrent au chevet de tous les mourants, la mortalité atteignit des proportions effrayantes : du 8 décembre 1653 au 20 août 1654, en particulier, 44 décès furent enregistrés et une quarantaine de personnes étaient déjà mortes depuis le mois de mars. Le cimetière était trop petit pour recevoir tant de cadavres, on les enterrait partout, à côté des maisons et même dans les champs.

Il y eut des scènes tragiques que le Registre des décès rapporte. Ainsi, Dominique Peyrau mourut

"dans le cimetière ayant lui-mesme fait son sépulchre et emporté son suaire après avoir enterré sa belle-mère et cinq de ses enfants et demeuré trois jours dans ledit cimetière, attendant la mort, ayant été plus lost confessé, et ayant emporté sur soy l'argent pour faire couvrir son corps de terre... "

Au mois de Juin, la consternation était générale ; les survivants de Cadeilhan-Trachère tournèrent leurs regards vers le Ciel et firent le vœu d'élever une chapelle sous le vacable de Notre-Dame de Piété. La peste cessa.

Les habitants de Cadeilhan-Trachère s'engagèrent, par acte notarié à doter et entretenir la chapelle. Le 20 juillet 1654, les consuls et habitants

"faisant tant pour eux que pour le reste des habitants de la communauté de Cadeilhan-Trachère, lesquels, de leur bon gré et franche volonté, mus de dévotion et ayant à cet effet bâti la chapelle de Notre-Dame de Piété au dit lieu de Cadeilhan, à ce qu'il plut à Notre-Seigneur appaiser son courroux et délivrer du fléau de la peste, pour la donation de ladite chapelle, entretien et réparation d'icelle ont promis et promettent de bailhet annuellement et à perpétuité la somme de trois livres et plus si besoin est... "

Ils fondent, en outre, par le même acte, 4 messes à célébrer chaque année le second samedi des mois de mai, juin, juillet et août, à huit sous chacune.

Enfin, Jean Ferras, s'engageait, lui aussi, à fonder trois autres messes : deux de Notre-Dame et l'autre en l'honneur du glorieux Saint-Sébastien "chantables à perpétuité". La chapelle avait dès lors son entretien assuré.

Sitôt qu'elle fut achevée, elle devint un foyer de dévotion dans Cadeilhan-Trachère. Les fidèles venaient y prier souvent ; les fiancés y contracter mariage pour se placer sous la protection de la Sainte-Vierge : Jean Ferras, de Cadeilhan, et Marguerite de Benque y reçurent la bénédiction nuptiale le 26 novembre 1654. Aux fêtes, spécialement à celles de l'Assomption et de la Fête-Dieu, les paroissiens de Cadeilhan-Trachère s&appos;y rendaient en procession, après vêpres.

En 1712, fut placé le balustre en bois de chêne qui fermait la façade de l'ancienne chapelle.

Sous la Révolution, la chapelle eut beaucoup à souffrir car elle fut dépouillée de ses revenus et de ses meubles. De ceux-ci, il ne reste plus que le pupitre du missel.

Mais pendant le XIX e siècle, les libéralités des fidèles : Jean-Pierre Soubiran, chanoine Pène, abbé Sajous en particulier, servirent à la remettre en état.

La chapelle de Notre-Dame de Piété n'était éclairée que par une fenêtre bien étroite du côté de l'épitre. La voûte formée d'un simple lambris était ornée d'inscriptions peintes rappelant les figures de la Vierge. La façade avait un clocheton que surmontait un coq en fer battu. L'autel en maçonnerie était adossé au mur nord de la chapelle.

En 1891, l'abbé Jean-Baptiste Sajous prit possession de la cure de Vignec et Cadeilhan-Trachère, son annexe. Il songea, dans la suite, à démolir la vieille chapelle pour en reconstruire sur son emplacement une autre plus vaste et plus belle qui pourrait, à l'occasion, servir d'église. Il commença à réaliser son projet en 1909. Avec le concours des habitants de Cadeilhan-Trachère, il fit jeter à terre la chapelle, puis construire le gros œuvre de la nouvelle : murs, toit, parquet du sanctuaire. Au sanctuaire, il plaça un bel autel de Notre-Dame de Pitié. Mais l'abbé Sajous quitta la cure de Vignec en 1912.

Lorsque M. l'abbé Vidalon y fut nommé curé en 1927, la chapelle inachevée servait à remiser les outils agricoles du quartier.

Avec le concours des habitants de Cadeilhan-Trachère, M. l'abbé Vidalon termina la chapelle qui est devenue pour ce village un centre de dévotion mariale. Quand les femmes se rendent à la fontaine, elles ne manquent pas de saluer Notre-Dame de Pitié par quelques "je vous salue Marie" ou quelques invocations.
