This Civil War monument is in Elmwood Cemetery, in northeast Beloit. The monument is a tall inscribed pillar with a statue of an armed soldier standing at rest. The inscription on the front of the monument is

Erected in honor of the defenders of the Union 1861-1865 by the patriotic citizens of Beloit and community under the auspices of the Woman's Relief Corps No. 52, Dept. of Kansas Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic.

The base of the monument indicates that it was dedicated May 30, 1913.

The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), Marines and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service who served in the Civil War. The Women's Relief Corps was chartered in 1883 as an auxiliary to the Grand Army.
