A Church has been located on the site of St Kenelm's since Saxon times with parts of the existing church thought to date back to 1180. St Kenelm was the son of Mercian king Kenulph II who on succeeding to his fathers throne, in AD818, age seven was murdered by his power hungry sister. Sainted by the legend of his murders concealment and a angel reporting the crime by dropping a paper on the high alter of St Peter's, Rome.

Renowned architectural historian Pevsner dates the south aisle to 1180 with extensive additions to the structure over the centuries. Rebuilding and additions have been a steady process extensively in the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries, continuing through to as recently as the 19th century. Most recently, 1856, restoration and the addition of a lych gate was performed under the architect G. E. Street.
