The community of West Granville is more than five miles west of Granville Center. In the 18th century they were separated by an arduous, twisty mountain road. This created the need for a second congregational church in this growing area of town. The congregation was organized on November 19th, 1781. The Greek Revival/Gothic Revival style church building was erected in 1778 as the Second Church of Christ Congregational. Today it is the earliest surviving church in Granville and is it is known as the West Granville Congregational Church.
The church is two stories high with white clapboard siding and a gable roof. Three entrances project from the main building. Above the entrances is a triangular pediment. A two tiered square tower was added in 1837 and the second story window with an elliptical arch was added later in the 19th century along with the spires and steeple on the tower. The sides of the building are five bays wide with rectangular windows on the lower and upper levels. The east side has a wooden staircase and door at the fifth bay of the lower level.
