The Peak & Northern Footpaths Society which was originally the Peak District & Northern Counties Preservation Society is a charity dedicated to preserving footpaths in the Peak District that are public rights of way.

The plaque also commemorates the society's success in establishing a public footpath between Hayfield and the Snake Inn, a famous pub on the Snake Pass, a major road that crosses the Peak District.
