This memorial to Harold Orton Todd, who perished on the USS Indianapolis, is on the east side of the Pontotoc County Courthouse within a larger veterans memorial. The engraved bench bears the image of the ship and gives a brief history of the sinking of that ship on July 30, 1945. The bench does not mention that of the 890 initial survivors, most perishing of exposure and shark attack after four days in the water.

The text on the bench is

HAROLD ORTON TODD CM/3
March 12, 1916 - July 30, 1945

U.S.S. Indianapolis
Heavy Cruiser

Carried the first atomic warheads to Guam that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on July 30, 1945 - thus ending World War II in the Pacific.

On their return trip home, a few minutes past midnight a Japanese submarine fired two torpedoes just below the waterline. The ship sank in less than 15 minutes. Of the 1196 officers and men aboard, only 316 survived.
