In the surroundings of the Lakes of Covadonga the oldest rocks are the Ordovician quartzites of the Formation Neighborhoods. These quartzites form the highlight that closes the depression of the
Vega de Comeya.
Above the limestones, and discordantly on them, some shales and sandstones appear whose deposit took place at the end of the Carboniferous (Áliva Formations and / or Lebeña). Its deposit occurred simultaneously with the emplacement of thrusts, when the platform carbonated was affected by variscal deformation. That is why these materials are known as synorogenic deposits. It is precisely the presence of these detrital deposits those that have
contributed to the waterproofing of buckets in which the lakes of Covadonga sit today.
The origin of the Lakes of Covadonga is related to the presence of these tongues of ice. In the lake area the presence of some rocks less resistant than limestones, mainly shales, favored glacial erosion more effective giving rise to known forms as over-excavation buckets glacier.
