Den 5. juni 1947 købte Danmark seks Catalina’er af typen PBY-5A, og i 1951 blev antallet øget til otte. Da Flyvevåbnet blev oprettet i 1950, overgik CAT’en fra Luftmarine-station København til ESK721på FSN Værløse. – ESK721 modtog i 1957 otte PBY-6A – en mere moderne udgave.
De danske Catalina’er blev hovedsageligt anvendt til opgaver i Grønland (eftersøgning og redning, isrekognoscering, luftfotografering m.m.), og missioner kunne have helt op til 17 timers varighed. – En Catalina fløj i f.m. Galethea-ekspeditionen i 1950 til Mombasa i Kenya.
Catalina’en blev udfaset af Flyvevåbnet den 13. november 1970.
Kun en af Danmarks PBY-5A'ere eksisterer stadig, den er på museum i Norge. 2 PBY-6A blev solgt til USA, men de total havareret. Kun 2 af Flyvevåbnets PBY-6A er tilbage, L-866 på museum i England. Den anden L-861 har i en årrække været udstillet ved Teknisk Museum, den indgår nu i Flyvevåbenmuseet hos Danmarks Flymuseum.

On 5 June 1947, Denmark bought six Catalbians of the type PBY-5A, and in 1951 the number was increased to eight. When the Air Force was established in 1950, the CAT was transferred from Luftmarine station Copenhagen to ESK721 on FSN Værløse. - In 1957, the ESK721 received eight PBY-6As - a more modern version.
The Danish Catalinas were mainly used for tasks in Greenland (search and rescue, ice reconnaissance, aerial photography, etc.), and missions could last up to 17 hours. - A Catalina flew at f.m. The Galethea Expedition in 1950 to Mombasa, Kenya.
The Catalina was phased out by the Air Force on November 13, 1970.
Only one of Denmark's PBY-5As still exists, it is in a museum in Norway. 2 PBY-6A were sold to the United States, but they totally crashed. Only 2 of the Air Force's PBY-6A remain, L-866 at a museum in England. The other L-861 has for a number of years been exhibited at the Technical Museum, it is now part of the Air Force Museum at the Danish Aviation Museum.
