You are here in the Kamp Westerbork memorial center. A terrible place, especially in the period 1942-1945, WW II.
The camp was then known as the porch to hell.
From 1 July 1942, the Nazis started using the camp as an intermediate station for the transport of Jews, Sinti, Roma political prisoners and arrested resistance fighters to the concentration camps. A total of 93 trains ran to the camps Auschwitz, Sobibor, Theresienstadt and Bergen-Belsen.
A total of 107,000 people died in this way.
The people were packed in freight wagons, transported like animals.
The wagons set up here are of exactly the same type as at the time.
May it be a warning to mankind.
The outside area of the memorial center can be visited free of charge during the day. There is also an indoor museum for which entrance must be paid.
