Comté de Matane. Diocèse de Rimouski. Les premiers établissements de cette paroisse se firent peu après la concession de la seigneurie de Matane au Sieur d’Amours, le 8 novembre 1662. Les registres de la paroisse s’ouvrent le 14 août 1842. Desservi par voie de mission de 1795 à 1845. Les missionnaires y résidèrent de 1845 à 1860. Un curé résidant y fut nommé en cette dernière année. Érection canonique: 16 mars 1861. Érection civile: 22 mai 1861. Le territoire de cette paroisse comprend la partie ouest de la seigneurie de Matane. Pour description, voir M. et P. de Deschamps, pages 108, 135 et 1228. La municipalité de Matane a été érigée en vertu de l’Acte 8 Vict. chap. 40, le 1er juillet 1845. La municipalité du village de Saint-Jérôme-de-Matane a été érigée le 1er avril 1893, en vertu du Code municipal. Le village, situé sur la rive sud du fleuve Saint-Laurent, est le terminus du chemin de fer «Quebec and Gulf Terminal», qui le relie à Mont-Joli. Le nom de Matane, dit M.P.G. Roy, signifie, en langue micmaque: «vivier de castors». Champlain, parlant du même endroit, le nomme «Mantanne». Au sujet de l’origine du nom de Matane, M. l’abbé A.A. Soucy, curé de cette paroisse, nous écrit: «Je lis dans les archives de la paroisse que le mot Matane, d’après l’interprétation d’un Autochtone malécite, veut dire: «nerf qui suit l’épine dorsale». C’est le nom donné à la rivière Matane qui monte dans les terres, sans aucun rapide, jusqu’à une distance de plus de vingt lieues. Le nom de cette rivière s’est étendu à toute la paroisse. La paroisse a été mise sous le patronage de saint Jérôme en l’honneur de l’abbé Jérôme Demers, qui fut vicaire général de Québec et supérieur du séminaire de Québec. Pop. 5,000.
