He is known for his criticism of the bourgeoisie and makes fun of their behavior and double standards. In 1892 he was imprisoned for 14 days when he had written a short story with inadmissible words.
His satire and cynical humor were clearly expressed in the novels Livsens Ondskab (The Evil of life) (1899), Slægten (The Family)(1898), Knagsted (1902) and Pastor (Priest) Sørensen og Co. (1913).
Several roads in Denmark are named after Gustav Wied.
