Unitarianism is a theological movement whose fundamental tenet is the belief that God is a single person as opposed to the more prevalent Christian dogma that God is a Trinity composed of the God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Unitarians believe that the teachings of Jesus were inspired by this singular God and Jesus is not an incarnated deity. In the United States, the Unitarian theology began in Boston, MA in 1784 and spread from New England. Many prominent Americans were Unitarians, including Presidents John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Millard Fillmore, and William Howard Taft; also poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and women's rights leader Susan B. Anthony.

The Greenfield Unitarian Society was organized by 23 male members of the Second Congregational Church on June 13, 1825 following a theological dispute about the fate of unbaptized babies who die. The first church building was a small wooden structure, near the present site which was dedicated, on August 15, 1837. On June 2, 1894 members chose All Souls Church for the name of a new church. The original building was moved farther south and the cornerstone for the present church building was laid on June 6, 1894. The English Revival style building was designed by architect John Williams Beal.

The church building is built out of local sandstone, with Longmeadow brownstone trim. The building has a square, three-story high belfry tower with a crenellated roof-line located at its northeastern corner. The main block of the church has steep gable red tile roof and a north facing recessed entrance covered by a gable roof. Above the west side of the entrance is a stained glass rosette window fabricated by Phipps, Slocomb & Co. The main block has a protruding gable covered entrance on the west side. The east side has two bays before a three bay wide extension connected to the main block with a slanted roof.

All Soul's Church is a contributing building to Greenfield's Main Street Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
