The marker in question here is a cast metal plaque affixed to the wall of number 14 Brushfield Street at first floor level. It is grubby and rusted and would benefit from conservation.

The plaque reads "St. / B B". The abbreviation stands for St Botolph Bishopsgate.

Above the plaque is an older-looking stone boundary marker that may date from an earlier building on this site. The inscription on the stone is now very difficult to read, but it includes: “This is the boundary of the Parish of St Botolph Bishopsgate”.

Brushfield Street was formerly called Union Street and led to the Artillery Grounds. The boundary was probably originally marked as being between St Botolph’s Parish and those artillery grounds, although there is no surviving Artillery Ground marking present here.

The first record of St Botolph-without-Bishopgate church is from 1212. The church stood just outside the city walls and St Botolph is, amongst other things, the patron saint of boundaries. The parish is however entirely within the boundary of the modern City of London.
Type of survey mark: Metal plaque.
