This 7.60m-high monument was erected in memory of Saint Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, who left Hardelot in 596 to evangelize England.
This monument was erected in 1906, on the north dike of Hardelot by the architect Louis-Marie CORDONNIER at the request of Sir John WHITLEY in memory of the monk AUGUSTINUS. This one left in the year 596 from our shore with about thirty other monks in order to evangelize England.
In 1910, Louis BLERIOT had this monument moved to facilitate his aeronautical tests on Hardelot beach. After more than one hundred years of exile, this witness to our heritage had to be rehabilitated and find its place on the dike, facing England where a replica of this same monument was also erected by the same patron. in Ebbsfleet, near Ramsgate.
It is thanks to the association PATRIMOINE HARDELOTOIS, which in 2010 launched a subscription to which 128 donors responded in partnership with the Heritage Foundation that the monument was installed in 2013 on private land donated by the Hardelot estate.
