The Mammoth Site is a museum and paleontological site. It is one of the largest concentrations of mammoth remains in the United States and can be seen in Hot Springs. It is an active paleontological excavation site at which research and excavations are continuing.
It has been a very large sinkhole of 40 x 120 m, where it is believed that mammoths have been caught or drowned and is estimated to be about 20,000 years old.
The site was discovered in 1974 when houses were to be built on the site and excavation work began. Bones appeared from the ground and studies showed that they were mammoth bones. The landowner donated the area to the public and it was set up as a working museum where excavations are still being made, among other things, by volunteers. Remains of 61 mammoths have so far been found.
It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1980.
