"Almost hidden in the farthest part of Galicia, there very close to the high mountains that close the horizon on the border with Portugal, but in the center almost of the old legal system of Braga, which for long centuries constituted an inherent part of the Galáico people , This humble, but unique monument is located in the midst of indelible memories of our past, to which it is intimately linked, and not far from the interesting ruins and vestiges of Roman times that recall the importance that this part of poetic and beautiful on the banks of the Limia.
As a monastic house and, apparently, as heirs, it was built in those times when the Visigothic monarchy began to crumble, back in the last years of the seventh century, and later restored by one of the most illustrious characters in Galicia, it acquires an importance extraordinary when, harassed by the invasion of the Arabs, some fugitive Christians chose it as a solitary one, for the hidden tomb of the body of the bishop of Guadix San Torcuato, in the second half of the 8th century; at such distant dates the documents reach and the building responds at all.
The piety of the people, making this humble and secluded church an obligatory point of constant pilgrimages and visits, moved the ambition of the powerful of Galicia in such a way that nobles and prelates fought for the possession of this monument during the 10th century. that they could not wrest from the hands of their legitimate heirs, because in demand of justice, which they achieved, they went before Ordoño II in the Council of Lugo, and Ramiro II, in that of León."
