The original ferry crossing here was a private enterprise established in 1839. It was taken over by the South Australian Government in 1849 creating a crossing for escort coaches bringing gold coming from the Victorian Goldfields to Adelaide.
The free ferry (Heron) operates 24 hours a day and takes a couple of minutes to cross the widest part of the lower Murray River
