At the Shepherds 'Field at the village of Beit Sahur, (Hebrew for "village of the shepherds"), an angel, according to Christian tradition, appeared to local shepherds to convey the message of Jesus' birth.
At the site, there are several caves that have been used as shrines over time, and archaeological excavations have shown that the oldest is from around 300 years. In the caves there are many religious symbols and you can see that they are still used for prayer.
The Shepherds' Field Church was built in 1954 by the Franciscans and the Italian architect Barluzz designed and built the Roman Catholic church on the site (sometimes called the Chapel at the Shepherds' Field) The church is tent-shaped.
