The town was originally surveyed with the name Queen's Own Town (after the Queens Own Regiment of Foot) in 1867, the name not being changed until 1940, although the adjacent railway station had already been named Finniss. The Finniss CPA is in the General Store, also known as 'the Old Post Office' which has been restored and is now operating as a Cafe, General Store and Fodder Shop, The CPA opens between 0900 and 1700 seven days a week for basic postal needs
