The General Library of the University of Coimbra is intregrated in the Alta da Coimbra complex, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designed by the architect Alberto José Pessoa and inaugurated in 1956. It occupies the place where the São Paulo Eremita College used to exist, a 16th century building demolished to give way to the Library.
The bas-reliefs, in the Estado Novo style (inspired in the nationalist principles, like the fascist and nazi architectures), were created by sculptors Duarte Angélico and António Duarte.
