Arsenal Football Club was founded in 1886 as Dial Arch FC by munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal Armaments Factory in Woolwich. The earliest reference to the club being nicknamed ‘The Gunners’ is from 1904 and cannons have featured on the club badge/crest from the very start.

It is to this background that a pair of cannon, manufactured at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, are on display in front of the main entrance to the club’s stadium in Holloway, north London.

The background to their placement here can be best obtained from the information plaque nearby, which reads as follows:

“32-Pounder Smooth Bore Muzzle Loading Cast Iron Guns on Iron Garrison Carriages.

These two guns were made in the Royal Gun Foundry on the Royal Arsenal Woolwich, close to Dial Arch Square where the football club originated in 1886.

They were mounted on ships and used as coastal batteries and also siege artillery. The guns weigh just under 3 tons, have a calibre of 6.5 inches and could fire a 32 pound projectile 2,900 yards. The carriages are standing iron garrison carriages used in forts and for guns in coastal defence positions.

They have been loaned to Arsenal Football Club by kind permission from the Royal Arillery Museum Firepower”.
