As part of the new residential development on the site of the former Brunswick Wharf Power Station, it was decided to mark the line of the Greenwich Meridian. Initially this took the form of a bronze strip set into the pavement and flanked by a double line of trees, running between Newport Avenue and the riverbank. This was extended in 2006 northwards to East India DLR station. Most of the bronze forming the strip was stolen in 2012.
At the point where the Meridian meets the north bank of the Thames is a small open space and in 2008 a compass rose was marked here in coloured paving slabs. The final stage of the development of the Meridian marking at this location was the decision by Tower Hamlets Council in 2010 to name the avenue of trees Prime Meridian Walk.
