At dusk on April 8, 1865, 300 yards west of this site, the Union Army's 8th lowa Infantry and three Illinois Regiments breached the Confederate main line of resistance. Under the cover of night, troops holding the thin gray line spiked their guns and made their way through the marshlands to Mobile. Thus ended the bitter 13-day Civil War Battle of Spanish Fort. The CSA lost 738 men out of a force of 2,827. The USA lost 1,678 of 32,000 soldiers while the US Navy lost 6 ships and 55 sailors.
