Ima was established by Walter and Laura Moncus, who were traveling through the area in 1902 but were waylaid by a winter storm and sheltered in a nearby canyon - the same canyon often used by notorious local outlaw Black Jack Ketchum. Their daughter Ima was born in 1903, and the Moncuses built a general store to serve others who were settling in the area. When the Post Office was established in 1908, the town was named for Ima. That post office closed in 1955, leaving Ima as a ghost town. Descendants of the original settlers still live in the area. The only remnant of the town are Ima Cemetery (maintained by the Sparks family, which has several burials here) and a community center (consisting of an abandoned church and a new metal building nearby).
