Greenway Sundial - Stratford - Greenwich Meridian Markers on Waymarking.com

Designed by artist Kate Williams, working with local school children from Manor Primary School, this sundial was unveiled on 29 May 2004. It is an analemic sundial, where a person stands on a marked point at the centre of the dial and reads the time from where their shadow falls. The appropriate place to stand varies from month to month, as indicated on a central plate.

The sundial is placed on the public footpath called the Greenway, which runs along the top of the Eastern Outfall Sewer between Bow and Beckton. Alongside is the magnificent Abbey Mills Pumping Station of the 1860s, through which the Meridian also passes. The sundial is on a brick-built bridge which takes the sewer over Abbey Lane.

A metal strip crosses the footpath to mark the line of the Meridian. This forms the central axis of the sundial and numbers to indicate the hour are set around in a neat semi-circle. Each number is to a different design, and these reflect the input of the local school children. Come here at noon and the noon line should align with the Meridian.

There is an explanatory plaque, but this has been vandalised and is legible only with difficulty.
