Located in Port Charlotte, Florida is the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Home. Upon approaching the entrance there is a mural on the backside of the entrance signage. This mural has the silhouette of a saluting service member with the wording of “We Salute Our Veterans” on a blue background with a soaring eagle off to the left. There are also three memorials attached to the brickwork surrounding the mural. Mural size is approximately 8' high by 12' long.
The Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Nursing Home is named after Private Douglas T. Jacobson, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient who fought heroically during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman on October 5, 1945. Further info on Douglas T. Jacobson at (

It appears that this mural and supporting structure is designed as a location for memorials to veterans and citizens related to the veterans home. Upon leaving the parking lot it stands out as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices our veterans have made.
