This fine museum is run by Santa Casa da Misericórdia, a centennial nationwide social institution. It opened in 2000, hosted in a former College House (Colégio de Santo Agostinho) in the historical center of Coimbra.

The building was built between 1593 and 1604, with the support of the Bishop of Coimbra, D. Jorge de Almeida. It remained in activity as a university college until 1834, when it passed into the hands of Santa Casa da Misericórdia. It later hosten an orphanage until 1966.

Its collection is divided into five sections: painting, sculpture, jewelery, ecclesiastical clothing and attire and furniture.

The painting is the most important, with a series of oil portraits of Providers and Benefactors of the Brotherhood whose dates range from the 17th to the 20th century. In addition to the many existing portraits, we highlight the five 18th century paintings by André Gonçalves, which glorify the scenic aspects of the painting.

With regard to sculpture, note for the works of the Renaissance João de Ruão, such as the high-relief altarpiece representing Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia (1550) and the Visitation of Mary, also from the mid-16th century. Note the sculptural group of the Deposition of Christ in the Tomb, from the late Gothic era, that is, from the beginning of the 16th century. Around the same time are the two large sculptures of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, carved in limestone and polychrome.

Other major sculptures to highlight: image of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Santo Agostinho, São Francisco Xavier (all from the 18th century). In polychrome faience you can see a Child Jesus do Bussaco, dating from the 18th century, which sits on a cork platform. Finally, there is a Crucified Christ in polychrome ivory, of Indo-Portuguese origin, created in the 17th century.

The jewelery pieces were of liturgical use, with several specimens of dates that oscillate between the 17th and 19th centuries.

There is a wide collection of vestments, that is, ceremonial clothes of ecclesiastical nature and many pieces of furniture, mostly from the 17th century in 'joanino' and D. José I styles.
