De grot is zes meter hoog en opgetrokken uit ruwe rotsblokken die afkomstig zijn uit de Belgische Ardennen.
Rechtsboven in de rotsen staat een bijna levensgroot wit beeld van ONZE-LIEVE-VROUWE van LOURDES. Dit is een kopie van het Franse beeld en dateert uit 1913.
Het is een plaats van rust en spiritualiteit, leunend tegen het kerkhof, midden in de rust van de polder. In de meimaand wordt bij goed weer het lof met rozenkrans gebeden. In de maand augustus zijn er meerdere vieringen rond MARIA TEN HEMELOPNEMING, 15 augustus.
Historie van de Lourdesgrot Noordeinde-Zevenhoven.
In het kort de geschiedenis van de Johannes Geboorte kerk.
Zevenhoven wordt al in 1290 vermeld als een zelfstandig parochie. In de middeleeuwen kerkten de Zevenhovenaren in een kerkje dat ongeveer op de plek moet hebben gestaan waar tegenwoordig de N.H. kerk staat ( kruising Dorpstraat-Stationsweg). Na 1580 was de katholieke bevolking van de statie Zevenhoven-Nieuwveen aangewezen op een schuilkerk die was gebouwd op een perceel grond op het Noordeinde. In 1829 werd de schuilkerk gerestaureerd.
In 1865 werd Nieuwveen van de parochie afgescheiden. De deplorabele staat van de kerktoren was in 1936 de reden om de schuilkerk af te breken. Op dezelfde plek kwam een nieuwe kerk, ontworpen door architect J.P. Dessing. Dit gebouw werd op 16 augustus 1938 ingezegend door bisschop Huibers van Haarlem.
In 1913 werd achter de kerk begonnen met de bouw van een kopie van de grot in het Franse Lourdes. De grot is gelegen in een klein bosje achter het kerkhof. Deze grot is zes meter hoog en opgetrokken uit ruwe rotsblokken die afkomstig zijn uit de Belgische Ardennen. In de nis in de grot staat een eenvoudig altaar van opgemetselde bakstenen. Bij de restauratie in 1977 is vóór de grot een platform gebouwd. Via een trap in dit platform loopt men naar boven de grot in. Op zondag 2 juli 1913 vond het inwijdingsfeest van de grot plaats. De plechtigheden werden voorafgegaan door een triduum onder leiding van de Capucijn R. Kauling. ‘s Morgens om 9 uur droeg Pastoor Meyer, die de grot heeft laten bouwen, als voorbereiding op het feest een mis op. ’s Middags om 14.00 uur hield men een MariaProcessie naar de Grot en werd de Grot plechtig ingezegend. De Lourdesgrot trok al vanaf 1913 de belangstelling van katholieken van buiten de parochie. Een toeristisch boekje vermeldt: “als men vanuit Amsterdagm over de Amstelveense weg rijdt, is men in tijd van vier uren in Zevenhoven. Men kan ook per boot over de Amstel gaan en uitstappen in Vrouwenakker. Dan is het nog slechts drie kwartier lopen. Het kleine, onbekende Zevenhoven heeft een schat die menig dorp zal benijden. Dankzij pastoor Meyer. In een hoekje van de tuin met ligging op het oosten, juist als in Lourdes, heeft men van grote steenblokken een rots opgestapeld. Als men vanaf het dorpje Noorden Zevenhoven inkomt, ziet men reeds van verre de grijze rotsmassa waartegen het witte Maria beeld afsteekt. De bewoners zijn met hun grot erg ingenomen. Op bepaalde tijden zijn er bijeenkomsten, begeleid door een muziekkorps. Soms gaat men dan door welgverzorgde lanen in processie naar het genadeoord. Een bord in de tuin wijst de vreendeling de weg”.
Vanaf 1913 werden, getuige aantekeningen in de afleesboeken van de parochie, behalve op 15 augustus, het feest van Maria ten Hemelopneming, ook in de maand mei allerlei plechtigheden en processies naar de Lourdesgrot gehouden.
Een notitie van 20 mei 1917 vermeldde het volgende: vanmiddag om 2 uur het lof met rozenkrans en litanie van de H.Maagd van Vrede gehouden bij gunstig weer bij de Lourdesgrot. Liederen; Wij groeten U o Koningin en te Lourdes op de bergen.
Begin juli 1918 werd in Zevenhoven een triduum gehouden onder leiding van pastoor Borromaeus de Greeve en vierde men het eerste lustrum van de inzegening van de Lourdesgrot achter de kerk. Op 25 augustus 1918 werd door het genootschap van de H. Kindsheid een optocht naar de grot gehouden.
Van 22 tot en met 24 juli 1920 werd in Zevenhoven opnieuw een triduum gehouden onder leiding van pater de Greeve en hield men de 25ste Maria hulde voor de grot. Getuige aantekeningen uit 1921 in een kasboekje van de parochie waarin de uitgaven voor allerlei werkzaamheden aan de grot zijn verantwoord, werd bij de grot ook Lourdeswater verkocht. In dit boekje zijn verder de kosten genoteerd voor een geestelijke van buiten de parochie die bij de grot een preek hield.
In de jaren zestig van de 20ste eeuw verminderde de belangstelling voor de Lourdesgrot en de Maria Vieringen. Door het almaar verder zakkende grondwater in de nabij gelegen polder verzakte de grot. Pastoor van Essen (1976-1984) een fervent Maria vereerder, wist zijn parochianen te stimuleren om de grot achter de parochiekerk weer ingrijpend te herstellen. Tijdens zijn pastoraat herleefde ook de belangstelling voor de Mariaprocessie naar de Lourdesgrot. Op 13 mei 1977 werd het Heiligdom voor een tweede keer plechtig ingezegend.
Op 13 augustus 1983 bestond de grot 70 jaar. Bij de viering van dit jubileum is de oude kerkklok vervangen door drie nieuwe kerkklokken die afkomstig zijn uit de Eusebiuskerk te Arnhem. De nieuwe klokken werden bij deze gelegenheid plechtig ingezegend en in de kerktoren gehangen.
De plechtigheden bij de Lourdesgrot vinden ieder jaar plaats op 15 augustus, Maria Ten Hemelopneming. Deze viering wordt verzorgd door een aantal mensen uit Uithoorn en omgeving en begint om 11 uur. Iedereen is daarbij welkom om mee te vieren.
De Johannes Geboortekerk bij de grot in Zevenhoven viert op de zaterdagavond welke het dichtst bij deze datum is gelegen om 19.00 uur een plechtig Eucharistieviering. Dit jaar -2013- op zaterdagavond 17 augustus om 19.00 uur. Mensen uit de wijde omgeving komen hier naar toe. Er is ruimt voor 800 mensen, die er ook vaak zijn.In de meimaand wordt bij goed weer ook het lof met rozenkrans gebeden.
Op zaterdag avond 10 juli 2010 is er een windhoos geweest, die het halve bos getroffen heeft. Veel bomen zijn om gewaaid of zwaar beschadigd en daarna gekapt. Ondanks de grote schade in het hele dorp bleef de grot gespaard, de windhoos ging er net langs. Dit is dus het Lourdes wonder in Zevenhoven. Inmiddels zijn er weer nieuwe bomen geplant.
Bij de grot is een mooie stiltetuin die op 24 juli 2012, 10 jaar bestond en zeker de moeite waard is om daar in rond te wandelen.

Zevenhoven is already mentioned in 1290 as an independent parish. In the Middle Ages, the people of Zevenhoven used to church in a small church that must have stood roughly on the spot where the N.H.kerk stands today (Dorpstraat-Stationsweg intersection). After 1580, the Catholic population of the Zevenhoven-Nieuwveen station was dependent on a hidden church that was built on a plot of land on Noordeinde. In 1829 the hidden church was restored.
Nieuwveen was separated from the parish in 1865. The deplorable state of the church tower was the reason to demolish the hidden church in 1936. A new church, designed by architect J.P. Dessing. This building was consecrated on August 16, 1938 by Bishop Huibers of Haarlem.
In 1913, work began behind the church on a copy of the cave in Lourdes, France. The cave is located in a small wood behind the cemetery. From 1913, according to notes in the parish's reading books, all kinds of ceremonies and processions to the Lourdes Grotto were held in May, except on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
A note dated May 20, 1917 stated the following: This afternoon at 2:00 pm the rosary and litany of the Blessed Virgin of Peace was held at the Lourdes Grotto in favorable weather. Songs; We greet you oh Queen and at Lourdes on the mountains.
At the beginning of July 1918 a triduum was held in Zevenhoven under the direction of Father Borromaeus de Greeve and the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of the Lourdes cave behind the church was celebrated. In the sixties of the 20th century, interest in the Lourdes Grotto and the Maria Celebrations diminished. The cave subsided as a result of the ever-sinking groundwater in the nearby polder. Pastor van Essen (1976-1984), an ardent devotee of Mary, managed to stimulate his parishioners to drastically restore the cave behind the parish church. During his pastoral ministry, interest in the Mary procession to the Lourdes grotto also revived. On May 13, 1977, the Sanctuary was solemnly consecrated a second time.
On August 13, 1983, the cave was 70 years old. During the celebration of this anniversary, the old church bell was replaced by three new church bells from the Eusebiuskerk in Arnhem. The new bells were solemnly blessed on this occasion and hung in the church tower.
The ceremonies at the Lourdes Grotto take place every year on August 15, Maria Ten Hemelopneming. This celebration is provided by a number of people from Uithoorn and the surrounding area and starts at 11 am. Everyone is welcome to join in the celebration.

On Saturday evening July 10, 2010 there was a whirlwind, which hit half the forest. Many trees were blown down or heavily damaged and then felled. Despite the great damage in the entire village, the cave was spared, the whirlwind just passed. So this is the Lourdes miracle in Zevenhoven. New trees have now been planted.
At the cave is a beautiful quiet garden that existed 10 years on July 24, 2012 and is certainly worth a walk around.
