[FR] La césure entre les deux styles s'oppose aussi dans les matériaux, pierre pour l'ancien et brique foraine rouge pour le plus récent.
La construction commence avec l'érection de la tour nord vers 1060-1080. La base de cette tour représentent un bel exemple de l'Art roman languedocien, avec ses murs renforcés d'appareillage en relief dans les angles et soutenant la toiture : lésènes et bandes lombardes.
Les arcs outrepassés sont systématiquement utilisés, au point qu'on peut les considérer comme un marqueur de l'art roman albigeois du xie siècle.
Le portail nord comporte le caractéristique arc outrepassé à voussures. La plus externe est travaillée avec des fleurs à huit pétales, les autres sont lisses. Les chapiteaux comportent des palmes, fleurs et corbeilles. Ils rappellent, là encore, l'école toulousaine, au même titre que l'église Saint-Michel de Lescure-d'Albigeois voisine et de même époque. La base des colonnes est également travaillée. Ces sculptures et les textes qui les évoquent, plaident pour une datation autour de 1120.
[EN] Dedicated to Saint Salvi, first Bishop of Albi from 574 to 584, the “Collégiale” associates elements of Romanesque (10th century) and Gothic (13th century) architecture, marked by the use of stone in the Romanesque elements and brick in the Gothic.
Saint-Salvi presents a composite architecture associating Romanesque and Gothic styles and is one of the largest Romanesque churches in and around Albi. It was converted into a fodder store after the French Revolution but was given back to the Church at the beginning of the 19th century.
Mounted by an impressive bell and watch tower, Saint-Salvi is one of the oldest buildings in Albi. All that remains today of the cloister, built in 1270 and destroyed during the French Revolution, is the southern gallery. The church includes elements of the Romanesque (for example the semi-circular arches) and Gothic (the capitals and the decoration of the pillars).
