"In 1298, the alderman moved into five houses and an orchard, forming a set corresponding to the influence of the current town hall. The building housing the town body built in place of the dwellings It was destroyed by fire and began its reconstruction from 1486 to 1492 with the construction of the northern enclosure wall, the western wall being completed in 1498. This crenellated wall flanked by turrets symbolized commercial prosperity and its desire for independence. However, the reconstruction of the rest of the building did not begin until the middle of the 16th century. The rest of the building remained dilapidated to the point that the city body used to meet in other places as in 1515. , where the council met at the Augustinian convent and, in 1542, near the rue Chaudrier.
The reconstruction of the town hall resumed with the construction of the North Pavilion. From 1568, when the Saint-Barthélémy church was destroyed, the election of the mayor took place at the town hall.
The large gallery began in 1595. The entire body of the building, with its gallery on the ground floor and its attic, was completed in 1606. The following year, the town body acquired, to the south-east of the main body, a house overlooking the rue des gentilshommes, the Échevins building.
A first town hall was reestablished in April 1694. This town hall was a town hall office at the high cost imposed on the Treasurers of France. On February 5, 1718, Louis XV detached the town hall from the finance office, formed a city body and made the town hall elective. Deprived of the echevinage, the finance office, then the city body, met in the Henri II house. In 1748, the governor's house was no longer suited to its role as the governor's residence and the governor preferred to negotiate with the city body its exchange for the benefit of the hotel Jouin de la Tremblaye. The building was acquired by the city for 60,000 pounds from Mr. Tremblay. The old alderman was then taken over by the city and again became the Town Hall of La Rochelle.

"En 1298, l'échevinage s'installe dans cinq maisons et un verger, formant un ensemble correspondant à l'emprise de l'actuel hôtel de ville. L'édifice abritant le corps de ville construit à la place des habitations fut détruit par un incendie. On entreprend sa reconstruction de 1486 à 1492 par l'édification du mur de clôture nord, le mur ouest étant achevé en 1498. Cette muraille crénelée et flanquée de tourelles symbolisait la prospérité commerciale et son désir d'indépendance. Cependant, la reconstruction du reste de l'édifice ne commença que vers le milieu du XVIe siècle. Le reste de l'édifice resta délabré au point que le corps de ville eut l'habitude de se réunir dans d'autre lieu comme en 1515, où le conseil se réunissait au couvent des Augustins et, en 1542, près de la rue Chaudrier.
La reconstruction de l'hôtel de ville reprend par la construction du Pavillon Nord. À partir de 1568, date de la destruction de l'église Saint-Barthélémy, l’élection du maire se déroula à l'hôtel de ville.
La grande galerie est commencée à partir de 1595. Tout le corps du bâtiment, avec sa galerie au rez-de-chaussée et ses combles, est achevé en 1606. L'année suivante, le corps de ville acquit, au sud-est du corps principal, une maison donnant sur la rue des gentilshommes, le bâtiment des Échevins.
Une première mairie fut rétablie en avril 1694. Cette mairie était un office de mairie au coût élevé imposé aux Trésoriers de France. Le 5 février 1718, Louis XV détacha la mairie du bureau de finance, constitua un corps de ville et rendit la mairie élective. Privé de l’échevinage, le bureau des finances, puis le corps de ville, se réunissait dans la maison Henri II. En 1748, la maison du gouverneur n'était plus adapté à son rôle de résidence du Gouverneur et le gouverneur préféra négocier avec le corps de ville son échange au profit de l'hôtel Jouin de la Tremblaye. Le bâtiment fut acquis par la ville pour 60 000 livres auprès de M. Tremblay. Le vieil échevinage est alors récupéré par la ville et redevint l'Hôtel de ville de La Rochelle.
Il est classé au titre des monuments historiques le 27 décembre 1861."
