As listed on the city of Ottawa web site, the Monaghan Forest is for passive recreation. This is a wild area with no facilities. The wilderness covers a large area, 58.8 hectares or 145 acres. There are many points of access: through Rooney Park at 15 Steeple Hill Crescent, along the Rideau Trail behind the Fallowfield United Church, at a small parking lot on Alti Place and the main parking lot on Fallowfield Road (posted co-ordinates).
There is an active quarry north of the forest. There are hiking trails through the Monaghan Forest. The trails were originally maintained by the former city of Nepean. Nepean municipal signs can still be seen on site.
The forest is full of geocaches.
