This garden was created in the center of a boulevard. The grounds were purchased by the municipality in 1885. The property used to be part of the Monastery of Santa Cruz.

The park was inaugurated in 1889 but works went on along the years and only in 1928 was finished. The park, as we see it today, dates from that year and was projected by Jacinto de Matos.

It's a pleasant place, provided with generous shades by the tall trees and the cafe and its terrace are very popular, specially in the summer time.

From the municipality website (English version - see link bellow):

"Its construction emerges with the urbanization project of this new area of the city.

The project, authored by the Oporto landscaper Jacinto Matos, is delimited by plane trees and a symmetrical distribution of flowerbeds and Portuguese pavement.

The garden was inaugurated in 1889 and only completed in 1929."
