This jail used to host those connected to the university who did bad deeds. Both from the academical sphere and the criminal sphere. Note that this is one of the oldest universities in the world and the 6th oldest in Europe. It's currently considered an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It's the only medieval jail in Portugal reaching our days in considerable shape. It was created in the 13th century and was active until 1834.
It's located under the Biblioteca Joanina, considered amongst the most beautiful libraries in the world, and the access is shared.
It can be visited by anyone who purchased the ticket to the University facilities.

Hours: 9am-7.30pm Mar-Oct, 9am-1pm & 2pm-5pm Nov-Feb
Fees?: 12,50 Euros for the general University ticket including the library and the Royal Palace as well as the Science Museum.
