This building began life as the New York City pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. It housed various displays on the city’s municipal police and fire departments. One display, called “Murder at Midnight,” featured demonstrations of police work from crime scene investigation through crime lab analysis. It was one of the few World’s Fair buildings that were intended to be permanent structures, and is, in fact, the only remaining building from the 1939 World’s Fair still standing.

When a World’s Fair returned to New York in 1964, the building resurrected its role as the New York City pavilion, this time housing the “Panorama of New York City” exhibit. This exhibit featured a massive scale model of the entire city of New York including simulated helicopter rides. Today, an updated version of this panorama is the highlight of the Queens Museum, the building’s current occupant.

When the United Nations was established in 1945, there was a lot of discussion regarding where the new organization should be headquartered. As a temporary solution, several buildings from the 1939 World’s Fair in New York were utilized. This continued until the new headquarters complex was completed on Manhattan along the East River in 1951. (For a while, the old World’s Fair site in Flushing, Queens was considered as a permanent location.) During these years (1946-50), the U.N. General Assembly met in the old New York City pavilion as alluded to on the stamp.

When not participating in a World’s Fair or hosting the General Assembly of the United Nations, this building has served as a skating rink. In fact, only about ten years ago, a new skating rink was opened in Corona Park allowing the Queens Museum to close the rink that has existed in their building since the early 1940s and expand their exhibition space.
