It succeeds a first lighthouse built on the Ile de Sein in 1839 but destroyed in 1944 during the Second World War.

It was listed as a historical monument by decree of December 31, 2015.

- In 1839, construction of the first lighthouse, a cylindrical tower of 43 m in masonry on a base.
- In 1876, the upper part of the tower was painted black over 12 m high.
- In 1896, construction of the oil gas manufacturing plant.
- In June 1911, the first radio beacons on the French coasts received their radio call signs and worked between wavelengths 80 to 150 meters. These radio-lighthouses created by André Blondel marked the entrance to the port of Brest: the radio-lighthouse on the lighthouse on the Ile de Sein had the radio code S ••• (and on the Ile d'Ouessant the lighthouse du Stiff had the radio code O ---), these two radio beacons worked on the wavelength of 150 meters (2 MHz) by damped wave transmitter4.
- In 1932, construction of the power station. The fire was electrified in December 1935.
- On August 4, 1944 the lighthouse was destroyed by German troops; the optics had been removed.

On February 16, 1952, the current lighthouse was lit on a reinforced concrete cylindrical tower on a main building built between November 1949 and October 1950.

The site is classified in 1980.

In the enclosure of the lighthouse is an electrical plant to supply the island with electricity.
