The view on the stamp is from the summit of Clingman’s dome on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Clingman’s Dome is the highest point in the state of Tennessee but the scenery on the stamp is entirely in North Carolina. The Appalachian Trail also crosses the summit of Clingman’s Dome. It roughly follows the state border running east to west at this point until it turns south across Shuckstack, the three-peaked ridge seen in the middle of the stamp.
Clingman’s Dome is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There’s an observation tower at the summit which is accessible via a half-mile paved trail. The Great Smoky Mountains gets millions of visitors every year and Clingman’s Dome is a popular destination within the park (it even has its own souvenir shop). I suspect that a lot people have a photo of this scene in their archives but may not realize that it once appeared on a postage stamp.
