The college's name is Muhlenberg, and for some reason the Bog Turtle also shares the name. It is not the Muhlenberg that the college is named after, but actually Gotthilf Heinrich Ernst Muhlenberg, an American clergyman and botanist who did most of his work in Lancaster County (about 90 minutes from the college).

The sculpture is located near the student union, in a flower bed. It was a gift from College President and Mrs. Jonathan Messerli in 1991.
