Walter Barbee was the grandson of Jones Barbee, who provided land for this cemetery in 1863, although there were already burials here that dated into the 1850s. He is buried in a row with his parents and grandparents, his final resting place marked by a marble monument placed by the Woodmen of the World.

The Woodmen of the World are known today as WoodmenLife, a fraternal society that provides insurance to its members. Visitors to older cemeteries can frequently spot the tree trunk monuments that they placed at the graves of their members, although not every tree trunk monument out there was placed by the Woodmen of the World: It was common in the late 19th century to use a log to note that a person had died young, and many infants have such grave markers. Eventually, those tree trunk monuments became too expensive to produce, and headstones would be marked with a Woodmen of the World emblem of some kind. Earlier ones featured a dove of peace with an olive branch in its beak, flying over a fallen log where the tools of the woodmen's trade -- hatchet, mallet, and wedge -- can be seen. Later ones like this one would show a simple tree stump instead. Here, the dove flies above "Hope" at the top of the front of the headstone, with cala lilies as decoration on the remaining three sides. The family name, "Barbee", is on the plinth, and below the organizational emblem is this inscription:

At Rest

----------

The maintenance of this cemetery is outstanding, especially for a cemetery that serves a small, rural community some miles away from the big city, which just happens to be Dublin, TX, population between three and four thousand. There are many modern granite plaques at the base of older headstones, providing the person's name, dates, and maybe an inscription where the original may be difficult to read. While Mr. Barbee's own headstone is fairly weathered, though, it's not difficult to read, and the plaque is superfluous for now.
