Lester Melville built the earliest mausoleum in Grand Rapids in the late 1860s after the death of his wife. It was built in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The mausoleum is a small, rectangular building with a slate roof and brick walls. Brick, a less-than-permanent material, is an uncommon material used for constructing a mausoleum.
