This stadium was built as part of a Volspark (people's park) between 1924 and 1926. It contains a soccer pitch in the center and a running track around the perimeter.
The Borussia Dortmund Soccer Club played here between 1937 and 1974, after which they moved to Westfalenstadion. During the Second World War, this stadium was badly damaged by bombing, but was rebuilt to serve Dortmund after the war.
Currently, the Borussia Dortmund II soccer team (4th tier of German soccer, serving as a development team for Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga team) calls this stadium home and 9,999 fans can attend the fixtures.
Track and field events are also hosted at Stadion Rote Erde.
