Skelton Grange Power Station operated from 1955 to 1995 and was supplied coal by the single track railway line.
These days the bridge is used by pedestrians and cyclists to access the towpath on either side of the Aire and Calder Navigation and a number of other paths in the area including one around Skelton Lake.
A similar bridge also crosses the River Aire to the north west of here.
